OUTLINE

What is the question you are answering in your own words?
What themes are reflected in two of the works we have studied?

What is your thesis statement? This sets up the entire paper with your focus and direction.
Although the settings of Catcher in the Rye and Montana 1948 are very different, they have many similar themes. Some of the main themes they have in common are death, professional misconduct, and sibling relations.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
Death

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. “The night after Allie's death Holden slept in the garage and broke "all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by the time, and I couldn't do it.”
b. The night after Allie died Holden did many violent things.

BODY PARAGRAPH 2
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
Professional misconduct

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. About 12% of therapists admit to sexual contact with patients.

b. “Rather than strengthen her marriage and increasing her self-esteem, the defendant caused the plaintiff to feel unworthy.”

What example(s) from the book(s) will you use to help prove your points?
a. Frank made inappropriate sexual actions towards the majority of his patients.

b. Not only did this make the patients afraid of doctors, but it also made them fear men in general.

BODY PARAGRAPH 3
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
Sibling relations

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. Poor parenting is reflected in poor sibling relations.

b. “The researchers emphasize that their findings do not mean that a poor childhood relationship with a sibling causes depression, but they say the two are strongly associated. “

What example(s) from the book(s) will you use to help prove your points?
a. Frank and Wes’ father have always favored Frank. On his part that is poor parenting. This led to Frank and Wes having a bad relationship as adults.

b. As an adult Wes is not always happy with his life around him and that may be linked to his poor sibling relationship.

CONCLUSION
What should we now understand after reading your paper? Where idea(s) does your paper led to?
a. Although all of these issues are hard to deal with, they made Holden and David stronger people in the long run.

b. Not only did these issues make them stronger in the long run, but it taught them how to deal with death, approach an inappropriate situation, and how to treat a sibling, or how you should treat a sibling.
