Guilt

When someone does something that they regret, or something in their life effects others around them negatively they often feel guilty. In the movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Charlie's grandpa feels guilty. Grandpa knows that Charlie has an extremely tough life living in such a cramped house having to do so many chores and work. They barely have enough money for food. Charlie's grandfather feels very guilty and on Charlie's birthday he sacrificed some of his own money so Charlie could go out and buy a chocolate bar for his birthday.

Although I have never committed a serious crime,I have done things that made me feel guilty. When I was five years old I stole fake nails from Toys R Us. I went to play at a friends house and after I was still feeling very bad about steeling, for I knew it was wrong. I showed my mom when she picked me up. She took me to the store and made me apologize; I also had to give the nails back. Afterwards, i felt much better and knew i had told the truth.

In the play Macbeth, guilt plays a big role in the plot. Macbeth feels extreme guilt for the murders he has committed and often sees ghosts. Lady Macbeth does not feel guilty consciously; however, when she is sleeping it comes to her. Lady Macbeth begins to sleepwalk, and one night she reveals the murders to a doctor. She has suppressed the guilt so much that her only way of letting it out is in her sleep.

Socratic Seminar 1

•In Shakespeare’s lifetime lady Macbeth did help the idea of feminism, for she was a leader and many woman were not; however, Lady Macbeth did horrible things and would not be a good role model today.

•Paris Hilton does young girls harm; she gives off the idea that if you are pretty you have to be stupid. The sad part about it is that Paris Hilton is really just putting on an act.

•Feminism today is woman standing up for their rights as human beings. One role model that stands out to me is Hilary Clinton.

•In the beginning of the play Macbeth was an honest character; the King trusted and cared for him. Now, he has killed the king and no one knows. He is lying to everyone.

•I feel that the showing of blood would make the play a little more interesting; however, Macbeth’s character is enough and I would not complain about the book.

•Most men today would not be able to control having their manliness challenged because they are embarrassed of what other people will think.

•I do not want to know my future. That is dangerous because if you know your future you may want to change it. And changing destiny cannot be good.

•Macbeth is definitely a tragic figure. His soul is weak and has been corrupted by his wife. It his tragic how week his is. Banquo is also a tragic figure, for he was murdered.

Feminism

In today’s society women are not treated with the same respect as men are, and many women feel very strongly about their rights. They beg the question, why should a woman be treated differently than a man? The answer to that is, they shouldn’t. These women who stand up for their rights as a human being are feminists. Feminists stand up for things such as abortion, equal pay, rape, domestic violence, and many other things. If a woman is raped and becomes pregnant involuntarily then she should have the right to an abortion. Some people, mostly men, do not understand that and are trying to ban abortions nation wide. This is less common now a day; however, often in the past and sometimes now women are paid much less than a man to do the same exact job. Another main aspect of feminism is domestic violence. Most cases of domestic violence are the husband beating the woman and not the woman beating the husband. Feminists are fighting to have places to go in cases of this.
I would not consider Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Brittany Spears, or Nicole Richie appropriate role models for young girls. They all get wasted every night, have inappropriate picture or videos out, and go to rehab weekly. They are everything feminism is against. They do not show woman being strong or respectable. Although these are all very bad role models for young children, there are also many good ones. A perfect example of a good role model is Hilary Clinton. She is an important political figure who broke the barrier and ran for first woman president. A good role model for young girls should be strong, respectable, sober, friendly, and stand up for what they believe in.
Although Lady Macbeth used her strength for evil, her characteristics as a woman are positive. She is extremely persuasive, persistent, and stands up for what she believes in. Lady Macbeth was able to convince her husband to kill the King. Although I would not want my child to look up to her as a role model for that reason I would want them to realize that her traits are necessary for a woman to succeed in life. Lady Macbeth’s actions are not positive; however, her characteristics are. Lady Macbeth is succeeding in a way that many feminists now a day would like to see other woman succeed.

Good People Do Bad Things

In the movie Thirteen, Tracey the main character, is a straight A+ student who has never done a drug in her life. Tracy meets a girl who changes her forever. She convinces Tracey to start doing many drugs and stealing. Tracey was just a naive girl who got caught up in the high school life. She was an extremely respectful kid who transformed almost over night. Tracey was a good person who did bad things.
Jimi Hendrix once said, "when the power of love over comes the love of power the world will know peace." This quote directly applys to Macbeth. The need for power overcame him, and he killed someone who he cared about a lot. Macbeth killed King Duncan for power; however, he also killed him because his wife urged him to. Lady pressured and manipulated him. Duncan never would have thought to kill the king without the pressure of his wife. By killing the king he will gain power and the throne. Macbeth's reasons for killing Dunkin do not justify his actions. Macbeth was a well respected thane who got caught up and commited a horrible crime. He was a good person who did a bad thing.
