MDW

Over Memorial Day Weekend I did not go away. I wish I had gone down to the shore or the city for a day because this break was kind of dull. On sunday night i went to SNL; Sara, Nicole, and Leigh's sweet sixteen. It was fun, and of course everyone danced. I had to leave early because my friend did not feel well and i was sleeping over her house. On Friday I went shopping with my mom which was a disaster as always, and that ended with us screaming at each other in the middle of Bloomingdales. Almost every day I either had people over, or I went to someone elses house. Staying home is boring.

OUTLINE

What is the question you are answering in your own words?
What themes are reflected in two of the works we have studied?

What is your thesis statement? This sets up the entire paper with your focus and direction.
Although the settings of Catcher in the Rye and Montana 1948 are very different, they have many similar themes. Some of the main themes they have in common are death, professional misconduct, and sibling relations.

BODY PARAGRAPH 1
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
Death

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. “The night after Allie's death Holden slept in the garage and broke "all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by the time, and I couldn't do it.”
b. The night after Allie died Holden did many violent things.

BODY PARAGRAPH 2
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
Professional misconduct

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. About 12% of therapists admit to sexual contact with patients.

b. “Rather than strengthen her marriage and increasing her self-esteem, the defendant caused the plaintiff to feel unworthy.”

What example(s) from the book(s) will you use to help prove your points?
a. Frank made inappropriate sexual actions towards the majority of his patients.

b. Not only did this make the patients afraid of doctors, but it also made them fear men in general.

BODY PARAGRAPH 3
What is the topic/idea of this paragraph?
Sibling relations

What quote(s) ideas from research will you use to help prove your points?
a. Poor parenting is reflected in poor sibling relations.

b. “The researchers emphasize that their findings do not mean that a poor childhood relationship with a sibling causes depression, but they say the two are strongly associated. “

What example(s) from the book(s) will you use to help prove your points?
a. Frank and Wes’ father have always favored Frank. On his part that is poor parenting. This led to Frank and Wes having a bad relationship as adults.

b. As an adult Wes is not always happy with his life around him and that may be linked to his poor sibling relationship.

CONCLUSION
What should we now understand after reading your paper? Where idea(s) does your paper led to?
a. Although all of these issues are hard to deal with, they made Holden and David stronger people in the long run.

b. Not only did these issues make them stronger in the long run, but it taught them how to deal with death, approach an inappropriate situation, and how to treat a sibling, or how you should treat a sibling.

Cornel Notes

TITLE: Couple File Suit against Psychiatrist
AUTHOR: D.L. Bennett
YEAR PUBLISHED: 2008

Main Idea #1:

Summary: a psychiatrist made improper advances toward a patient with marital problems.

Quote: “ I would love to make love to you. I always have been attracted to you.”

Question: Was the wife against this?

Main Idea #2:

Summary: About 12% of therapists admit to sexual contact with patients.

Quote: “Many who cross the line are the last person we would expect.”

Question: If 12% of therapists admit to that, then why do the numbers keep going up?

Main Idea #3:

Summary: His advances confused and upset the patient.

Quote: “Rather than strengthen her marriage and increasing her self-esteem, the defendant caused the plaintiff to feel unworthy.”

Question: Shouldn’t she have been angry and insulted?

How will this source help you write your paper?
It gives me a real life example of professional misconduct, which is seen in Catcher in the Rye and Montana 1948.

TITLE: In Memoriam: Allie Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye
AUTHOR: Edwin H Miller
YEAR PUBLISHED: 1982

Main Idea #1:

Summary: Holden’s brother died of leukemia and he has had a very hard time dealing with it.

Quote: “Life stopped for Holden on July 18, 1946, the day his brother died of leukemia.”

Question: Why didn’t his parents get him help?

Main Idea #2
Summary: Although his brother Allie died, Holden still has Phoebe.

Quote: he finds Phoebe asleep in D. B.'s bed: "I felt swell for a change." Safe and protected, he begins to relax and no longer worries "whether they'd catch me home or not." What he does not say is that he would like to be caught. At first Phoebe is "very affectionate" until she guesses that he has been kicked out of Pencey Prep. Then, hurt and angry, a reaction which he cannot understand, she beats him with her fists and says over and over, "Daddy'll kill you!" At last Holden tellingly replies, "No, he won't. The worst he'll do, he'll give me hell again, and then he'll send me to that goddam military school. That's all he'll do."

Question: Why doesn't Holden just tell his parents he wants to come home?

Main Idea #3:

Summary: The night after Allie died Holden did many violent things.

Quote: “The night after Allie's death Holden slept in the garage and broke "all the goddam windows with my fist, just for the hell of it. I even tried to break all the windows on the station wagon we had that summer, but my hand was already broken and everything by the time, and I couldn't do it.”

Question: Why did Holden act so angry, while David and his family barely reacted?

How will this source help you write your paper? This will help me compare Holden’s reaction to death with David’s.

TITLE: In Memoriam: Male Depression is Linked to Poor Sibling Relations
AUTHOR: Nicholas Bakalar
YEAR PUBLISHED: 2007

Main Idea #1:

Summary: Men who have poor relationships with their siblings as a kid are more likely to be depressed as an adult.

Quote: “The researchers emphasize that their findings do not mean that a poor childhood relationship with a sibling causes depression, but they say the two are strongly associated. “

Question: If this is true, then why don’t parents get more involved?

Main Idea #2:

Summary: Poor parenting is reflected in poor sibling relations.

Quote: ''Poor parenting may be reflected in poor sibling relationships,'' said Dr. Robert J. Waldinger, the lead author of the study and an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard. ''But once you've taken account of the quality of sibling relationships, knowing about the quality of parenting doesn't add much information.''

Question: Is this why Frank and Wes have such a bad relationship?

Main Idea #3:

Summary: These sibling relation facts pertain more to men than woman.

Quote: ''This is a really important study,'' said Myrna M. Weissman, a professor of psychiatry at Columbia University who was not involved in the work. ''The one caveat is that these were all men, and sibling relationships may pertain more to men than to women.''

Question: Why does it pertain more to men than woman?

How will this source help you write your paper? This source helps me understand why Frank and Wes had such a bad relationship.

Socratic Seminar 2

1)I feel that Frank got what he deserved. Frank raped woman and then killed one; his punishment was jail. It was Frank’s decision to commit suicide.
2)I can relate this book to Catcher in the Rye. Some of the common themes are death, professional misconduct, growing up, and sibling relations.
3)I agree with Nicole. The parents in Catcher in the Rye are very similar to the parents in Montana 1948. They are very above the children.
4)Matt compared Frank to Benjamin in Animal Farm. I think that is a great comparison, for they both sit back and relax and when they finally act on it, it is to late.
5)I feel that it was a good decision for the family to leave Montana. They had no family that they were close with left and everyone will find out what happened. Also, agreeing with Mariana, it would be hard on David if they stayed. Now that they moved David has a lot more freedom.
6)A history book only tells you one side of the story, and David told the story without Frank’s views.

Sibling Rivalry

One of the main themes of Montana 1948 is Sibling Rivalry. Although uncle Frank and Wes are adults, they still have sibling rivalry. David explains that Frank is handsome, wavy haired, tall, and had the athletic grace his father Wes lacked. David says, “ Frank was witty, charming, at smiling ease with his life and everything in it. Alongside his brother my father soon seemed somewhat prosaic. Oh, stolid, surely, and steady and dependable. But inevitably, inescapably dull. Nothing glittered in my fathers wake the way it did in Uncle Franks.” This shows how Wes is competing with Frank and has been his whole life. When one sibling is better than the other at something it often leads to rivalry. Frank is more athletic and better looking than Wes; therefore, they have sibling rivalry.

A good tactic to deal with sibling rivalry is to use your sibling’s success to push yourself (Henry, 2008.); however, in Montana 1948 Wes does not do that. Many siblings compete and get angry at each other when one does better, but using this tactic could improve the sibling’s relationship and daily lives. In the article Family Feud Olympia says, “ I used her earning that scholarship as motivation to excel in my classes.” This shows Olympia using her sister’s success to push herself. In Montana 1948 Frank goes to the army and does many honorable things, which causes the father of Frank and Wes to favor Frank. Instead of making something positive out of this, Wes just walks away from the speech and picks up garbage. He does not change his life or try to improve his job. Wes should have taken this as an inspiration to do something big such as moving to be a sheriff in a town where he actually has to do something. Instead he did nothing and held his jealousy of his brother in. Some siblings act the same way as Frank and Wes, and many act worse by fighting verbally or physically. Henry’s tactic of dealing with sibling rivalry is peaceful and efficient.

Although the essay paragraph and the research paragraph are both focused on sibling rivalry they are both very different. The essays main focus is to show themes of the book, and one if them is sibling rivalry whereas the main focus of the research paper is to show tactics to deal with sibling rivalry. In the research paper we had to connect the tactics to our literature, Montana 1948. When writing an essay you use the book to support your statements; however, when writing a research paper you use facts or articles to support your statements. An essay is more creative than a research paper.
